TILADOR COTTAGE |
||||
| The
summer cottage built about 1920 sits on Labrador Pond (a true lake) in
the rolling hills of a scenic wooded farm area in Oxford County, Maine.
It has an old-time feeling and is comfortably furnished. The lake is about
3/4 by 1 mile in size, located 25 miles northwest of Lewiston (about 40
miles south of Augusta.) The cottage is built on a point of land that
juts out into the lake, overlooking water on two of its four sides with
a western view of mountains and sunsets. Set amidst white birch and oak trees with wild grapes and blueberries growing nearby, the cottage is about 150 feet from a small blacktop country road. 9-10 houses are clustered on the eastern shore of the lake; the western shore of the lake is a wild bird preserve, with ducks and loons, and will remain undeveloped. The feeling here is secluded, but not isolated. |

The
lake abounds with food for the fisherman: plentiful bass, lake trout,
perch and pickerel. Many trout streams are nearby. Large mouth bass
hide out in the reeds at the far Oxford County is justifiably renowned for its mineral mines for rockhounds, beautiful colonial houses, churches and historical sites (Abe Lincoln's first vice-president, Hannibal Hamlin, was from nearby Paris Hill, seven miles away.) There is a full schedule of weekly auto races, summer fairs, antique places by the score, summer theater and auctions. This area is definitely an antique collector's dream. Be sure to visit the antique stores in Hallowell if you drive up to the Augusta area for fairs or a trip to the lovely state capital. There is a summer theater en route to Augusta in Monmouth, the Shaker Village. At least seven or eight movie theaters are within a 25 mile drive, as well as a mini-golf course at nearby Bear Pond. Lobsters can be bought in Paris or Norway, and the seashore offers a tempting side trip. |
